Georgia Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrian crashes are a growing public safety crisis in Georgia and the United States. As roadways become busier and distractions more common, those traveling on foot are facing increasing risks. Nationally, pedestrian fatalities have reached alarming levels, with over 7,500 deaths reported in 2022—the highest number in more than four decades, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.
In Georgia, the trend is just as troubling. The state reported 360 pedestrian deaths in 2022, reflecting a sharp increase in recent years. These incidents often occur in urban areas with limited crosswalks, poor lighting, or high-speed traffic. The majority of pedestrian fatalities happen at night, and many involve drivers who are speeding, impaired, or distracted.
Skateboarders and other non-motorized road users are also vulnerable, especially when forced to share roads with fast-moving vehicles. Every year in the U.S., more than 100,000 skateboarding injuries are treated in emergency rooms, many due to collisions with vehicles or unsafe roadway conditions. These statistics highlight a critical need for improved infrastructure, public awareness, and accountability.
Negligent driving remains a leading cause of pedestrian and skateboard-related accidents. Whether it’s texting while driving, ignoring crosswalks, or driving under the influence, these actions can have tragic consequences. And while drivers may walk away with minor damage, pedestrians often suffer severe, life-altering injuries, from broken bones and head trauma to permanent disability.
The aftermath of such an incident is more than physical. Victims are often left struggling with emotional trauma, overwhelming medical costs, lost income, and diminished quality of life. If you or a loved one has been hit by a vehicle while walking or skateboarding, it’s crucial to take legal action.
