Georgia Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrian accidents have become an increasingly serious concern in Georgia, claiming hundreds of lives and affecting countless families each year. While traffic crashes overall are a major issue across the U.S.—with more than 6 million accidents annually resulting in millions of injuries—pedestrian fatalities have shown especially troubling trends in recent years.
In Georgia, pedestrian deaths have surged, making up a growing portion of traffic-related fatalities. In 2022 alone, 360 pedestrians lost their lives on Georgia roadways, marking one of the highest totals in the state’s history. These numbers reflect a nationwide crisis, as pedestrian deaths in the U.S. continue to climb due to a mix of urban sprawl, distracted driving, and inadequate infrastructure for people on foot.
Many of these tragic incidents are preventable. Driver negligence is a leading cause—with speeding, failure to yield, distracted driving (such as texting), and impaired driving frequently cited as contributing factors. In Georgia, alcohol is involved in approximately one-quarter of all traffic deaths, and many of those impact vulnerable road users like pedestrians.
Victims of pedestrian accidents often suffer catastrophic injuries, including head trauma, spinal cord damage, and broken bones. These injuries can lead to long-term disability, emotional distress, and steep medical costs. Unlike drivers, pedestrians have no physical protection, making even low-speed impacts potentially fatal.
