Georgia Structure Fires
House fires continue to pose a serious threat to Georgia residents, with residential fires making up a significant share of the state’s fire-related fatalities. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, in 2023, Georgia reported approximately 7.8 deaths per 1,000 residential structure fires—well above the national average of 5.8. These tragic numbers reflect just how devastating and deadly house fires can be across the state.
The most common causes of these blazes include faulty heating units, electrical system failures, and unattended cooking. Routine maintenance and ensuring that appliances are up to code are essential steps in preventing household fires. Nationally, fires in residential buildings have claimed more than 2,600 lives and caused nearly $7 billion in property losses over the past five years.
In Georgia, the consequences have been especially grim. In 2021 alone, 126 individuals lost their lives due to residential fires—a staggering 31% increase from the year before. Among the victims were 15 children, highlighting the urgent need for preventive action, such as installing and regularly testing smoke detectors and creating a clear family escape plan.
